STILL WORRIED YOU CANNOT AFFORD A LAWYER? Lawyers fees are tightly regulated by the Social Security Administration. Again, no lawyer is permitted to charge or collect a fee without Social Security's approval of the fee. There is no approval and no fee unless you win the case and you collect benefits. The fee is paid from the back awarded benefits. The amount of the fee is 25% of the back awarded benefits and there is a maximum amount. Social Security always has to approve any fee before one is owing to the lawyer.
